50 Gerda Henkel Foundation Scholarship Grants In Germany for International Students in Germany
Closing Dates: Applications for doctoral scholarships are considered throughout the year. The recipients of PhD grants are selected four times a year.
Calling for applications for 50 outstanding students who wish to start in Germany, the Gerda Henkel Foundation is pleased to offer scholarships for the 2022/23 academic session to all interested students.
About the Gerda Henkel Foundation
The Gerda Henkel Foundation was founded in June 1976 by Lisa Maskell in memory of her mother, Gerda Henkel, as a foundation under civil law with legal capacity based in Düsseldorf. The Gerda Henkel Foundation provides financial support for the historical humanities.
Project research that takes up current issues in a larger historical context or deliberately focuses on current or future topics is supported by time-limited programs such as the Democracy, Forced Migration and Lost Cities funding programs.
Selection criterion:
- Students must enroll in doctoral programs at the university.
- The scholarship is awarded in all subjects offered by the university
- If an applicant was 25 years old when they graduated, they can still apply to the Foundation for a Ph.D. apply. Scholarship from the age of 35. This age limit is extended to the following situations: evening school, raising children, military service, work experience and other exceptional circumstances.
Advantages:
The Gerda Henkel Foundation is making the amount of 1,600 euros available. It is not possible to receive a salary or an old-age pension and a scholarship at the same time. The funding period for doctoral scholarships from the foundation is up to two years.
Application process:
To be eligible for this opportunity, applicants must complete the scholarship application form, and letters of recommendation must be uploaded via the Online Referral Form personally signed by their authors. Please do not also send the documents by e-mail and post.
Required Documents:
The following documents must be attached to an application for a doctorate. Scholarship (in German or English)
- Description of the research project (max. eight pages)
- Plus bibliography, if applicable (in addition to the max. eight pages)
- At least font size 11 and line spacing 1.5
- Schedule and work plan detailing necessary travel to archives, libraries and museums or other destinations required for the completion of the dissertation (max. two pages)
- Detailed cost calculation (possibly estimate) of the expected travel and material costs
- No college or tuition fees
- CV in tabular form
- Certificate of the university degree that entitles you to do a doctorate (usually a master’s certificate; for direct doctorates: seminar certificates; no bachelor’s certificates, please). Please send us copies; References do not have to be certified.
- Two reports that provide information about the qualifications of the applicant and the quality of the doctoral project:
- It is up to the applicant to select the reviewers.
- The second review may not be prepared by the person who later acts as the second reviewer for the doctorate. Thesis.

Entry requirements:
- Applicants must have at least 1.5 or higher in Germany (comparable to grade A in other countries). In the case of applicants with a foreign degree, a separate examination is carried out in the office of the foundation for inclusion in the selection process.
- Language requirement: Students must have a Certificate of English Proficiency.
