DAAD scholarships in Germany are now open to Afghan students who wish to pursue a degree at a university of their choice in the country.
The scholarship award is open to applicants of all levels from undergraduate, postgraduate or doctoral programs. The aim of the program is to support students and scientists from Afghanistan with bridging scholarships when starting or continuing their bachelor’s or master’s degree at a state or state-recognized university in Germany.
Who is eligible to apply?
Afghan students, graduates, doctoral candidates and postdocs of all disciplines are eligible to apply.
- Applicants who can prove Afghan citizenship (no dual citizenship),
- Applicants who are already enrolled as bachelor’s or master’s students, who also submit a notification of admission by the application deadline, or who are doctoral and postdoctoral students at an institution or
- Applicants who submit a confirmation of supervision or a letter of invitation by the application deadline,
- Applicants who are usually already in Germany with a valid residence permit at the time of the application deadline,
- Applicants who have generally not been in Germany for longer than 15 months at the time of the application deadline. This does not rule out applications from Afghans with a longer stay after a first degree or similar in Germany.
- Students (preparatory college and bachelor)
- attending a preparatory college in accordance with their prior knowledge of the desired course of study or
- Participation in a bachelor’s degree
Graduates (Masters)
- Participation in a master’s degree
PhD students
- Individual projects under the supervision of a university teacher (doctoral supervisor) or
- Participation in a structured doctoral program
postdocs
- individual projects in cooperation with a university lecturer or
- Participation in a structured postdoc program
How to apply
Applicants must now submit their applications for admission via the My DAAD register or registration form. Upload the completed application form and the other application documents in PDF format to the portal.
duration of the promotion
1 month to a maximum of 6 months; A selection committee decides on the duration of the funding and depends on the respective project and the workload of the applicant.
The funding must be completed by January 31, 2023 at the latest.
The scholarship is non-renewable.

Funding for a scholarship includes:
- depending on the academic level monthly payments of
- 861 euros for students (preparatory college and Bachelor) and graduates (Master),
- 1,200 euros for doctoral students and postdocs
- Contributions to health, accident and personal liability insurance
Under certain conditions, scholarship holders can receive the following additional benefits:
- monthly rent subsidy
- Monthly flat rate for family members

Please note that during a DAAD scholarship you may not accept any other DAAD scholarship, Erasmus+ scholarship or other scholarships or awards from other German sources and may not apply for funding from the German state education grant system (BAföG).

Applicants are selected by a selection committee appointed by the DAAD’s department ST33 – Middle East, North Africa.
Selection criterion:
- Academic qualification (documented by the last qualifying degree: high school diploma or university certificate)
- Quality of the study or research project
- Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees (proven by a certificate of enrollment (if available), proof of previous academic achievements (transcript of records) or admission and language certificate
- Doctoral and postdoc phase (documented by acceptance as a (post)doctoral student (if applicable) and letter of recommendation or confirmation of supervision or letter of invitation, research application and schedule)
- Personal motivation for the scholarship (documented by a letter of motivation that describes the current personal risk situation and the future prospects in Germany made possible by a scholarship)
