Hooray! Monash University grants the Museums Victoria Doctoral Research Scholarship Application to all exceptional students wishing to begin research studies at the University for the 2022-2024 academic session in Australia. This PhD scholarship offers an annual stipend of $5,000.

The Robert Blackwood Partnership is a collaboration between Monash University and Museums Victoria to encourage and facilitate new research project ideas and initiatives leading to impactful collaborations and significant external funding.

About Monash University

Monash University is a public research university based in Melbourne, Australia. Named after prominent World War I general Sir John Monash, it was established in 1958 and is the second oldest university in the state of Victoria. The university has a number of campuses, four of which are in Victoria (Clayton, Caulfield, Peninsula and Parkville) and one in Malaysia. Monash also has a research and teaching center in Prato, Italy, a graduate school in Mumbai, India and a graduate school in Suzhou, China. Monash University courses are also offered in other campuses, including South Africa.

Applicable subjects:

Two scholarships per year (for suitable applicants):

  • one in the disciplines Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS).
  • one in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

Program period: 3-4 years (full time).

Admission criteria:

To be eligible for the Monash University – Museums Victoria PhD Research Scholarship, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Preferred Language: General English language test requirements: (6.5) overall (no band below 6.0) in IELTS and (79+) Reading 13, Listening 12, Speaking 18 and Writing 21 in TOEFL.
    • English Language Test Requirements for Arts, Business and Business: (7) overall (no band below 6.5) in IELTS and (94+) Reading 19, Listening 20, Speaking 20 and Writing 24 TOEFL.
  • Eligible countries: All countries in the world
  • A beginning or ongoing full-time PhD student enrolled in Research Quarter 1 (the following year) at a Monash campus in Australia.
  • Working on projects that are either co-supervised by Monash and Museums Victoriaor essentially focus on some aspects of Museum Victoria’s collection.
  • In the first two years of the candidature and must meet all study requirements in a timely manner (e.g. milestones).
  • A bachelor’s degree requiring at least four years of full-time study in a relevant field, typically including a fourth-year research component, and leading to an Honors 1 or 2A in a relevant field.
  • A course leading to a level determined by the relevant department, faculty and committee to be equivalent to Honors 1 or 2A in a relevant field.
  • A master’s degree associated with work, usually including a significant research component, including at least 25% of a full-time equivalent year of work, including a thesis. As a rule, it is expected that the research work or the research project has been awarded the grade 2A. In the case of ungraded performances, the assessments of the examiners will be taken into account.
  • hold qualifications deemed equivalent by GRC.
  • Scholarships are awarded on the basis of an applicant’s academic merit, research performance, and previous research experience.
  • You have never held a Postgraduate Research Award funded by the Australian Government or Monash for more than six months.

To keep this scholarship:

  • You must comply with Monash University RTP Scholarship Policies and Procedures.
  • You must be willing to participate in activities that showcase the Robert Blackwood partnership (eg, research seminars, promotional events).
  • After submitting the thesis, a report on the cooperation with Museums-Victoria must be prepared.
